kardinal SchönbornThe autumn plenary assembly of the Austrian Bishops’ Conference (ÖBK) has been going on since yesterday afternoon. The bishops met at the chapel of Bergkirche in Eisenstadt, where works would end on Friday, 11 November, with a Pontifical in honour of Saint Martin, presided over by Hungarian Cardinal Péter Erdő. Ecumenical process and the reflections on the commemoration of the Lutheran Reform will be the main theme of this plenary. A joint press conference of Cardinal Christoph Schönborn, President of ÖBK, and Lutheran bishop Michael Bunker is taking place today, at 3:00 p.m., at the Eisenstadt Haus, the seat of the plenary. After that, at 6:00 p.m., at the Protestant Church of Rust Seehof, there will be an ecumenical prayer with the representatives of the Evangelical Church of the Augsburg (Lutheran) Confession, of the Evangelical Church of the Helvetic (reformed) Confession, and of the Methodist Church. The ecumenical theme will go on Wednesday 9, a day of studies, with a conference of former Lutheran Evangelical Theological Superintendent Luise Müller and Catholic Theologian Jozef Niewiadomski. Cooperation of Churches in charity, education, and the spiritual process of communion will be examined. Another important question of the plenary will be the election of ÖBK President and Secretary General. Following the Statute, Cardinal Christoph Schönborn, managing ÖBK since 1998, could be re-elected for his fourth mandate.
