Pope of Alexandria and Patriarch of the See of Saint Mark

Dear Brother,

After my visit to Egypt and the blessed encounter with Your Holiness in Cairo, and recalling the fourth anniversary of our fraternal meeting in Rome on 10 May 2013, I take this opportunity to offer my prayerful best wishes for your peace and health, as well as my joy and gratitude for the spiritual bonds uniting the See of Peter and the See of Mark.

I once more express my profound appreciation for your hospitality and for our moving meeting and common prayer as brothers in Christ. I am especially grateful that we have strengthened our baptismal unity in the body of Christ by declaring together “that we, with one mind and heart, will seek sincerely not to repeat the baptism that has been administered in either of our Churches for any person who wishes to join the other”. Our bonds of fraternity “challenge us to intensify our common efforts to persevere in the search for visible unity in diversity, under the guidance of the Holy Spirit”.

Along this path we are sustained by the powerful intercession and example of the martyrs. May we continue to advance together on our journey towards the same Eucharistic table, and grow in love and reconciliation.

I assure Your Holiness of my continued prayers for you, and for peace in Egypt and the Middle East. In this Easter season I pray that the Holy Spirit, the strength and tenderness of God, may fill our hearts with his grace and kindle in them the fire of his love. May the Spirit of peace bestow on us an increase of hope, friendship and harmony.

With these sentiments, on this special occasion which has rightly become known as the day of friendship between the Coptic Orthodox Church and the Catholic Church, I exchange with Your Holiness a fraternal embrace of peace in Christ our Lord.

أيها الأخ الحبيب،

بعد زيارتي إلى مصر واللقاء المبارك مع قداستكم بالقاهرة، ومسترجعًا الذكرى الرابعة للقائنا الأخويّ يوم 10 مايو 2013، إني أغتنم هذه الفرصة كي أعبّر عن أخلص أمانيّ القلبية لكم بالسلام والصحّة، كما وعن فرحي وامتناني على الأواصر الروحيّة التي تجمع كرسي القدّيس بطرس بكرسي القدّيس مرقس.

أجدّد شكري العميق لكم على كرم الضيافة التي قُدِّمت لي، وعلى لقائنا المؤثّر، وصلاتنا المشتركة كأخوة في المسيح. وإني ممتنّ بشكل خاص، على تعزيز وحدتنا في جسد المسيح الأوحد والتي ننالها بالمعموديّة، إذ أعلنّا: "بشكل متبادل، بأننا نسعى جاهدين، بضمير صالح، نحو عدم إعادة سرّ المعموديّة الذي تمَّ منحه ‏في كلٍّ من كنيستينا لأيّ شخص يريد الانضمام للكنيسة الأخرى". إن أواصر الأخوّة "تحثّنا على تكثيف جهودنا المشتركة للمثابرة في البحث عن الوحدة المنظورة في التنوع، تحت إرشاد الروح القدس".

يعضدنا طيلة هذه المسيرة مِثال الشهداء وشفاعتهم القويَّين. لنكمل إذًا مسيرتنا المشتركة نحو ذات المائدة الإفخارستيّة، وننمو في المحبّة والمصالحة.

وأؤكد لقداستكم مواظبتي على الصلاة من أجلكم ومن أجل السلام في مصر وفي الشرق الأوسط كافة. وأسأل الروح القدس، في زمن القيامة هذا، سرّ القوّة والحنان، أن يملأ القلوبَ بالنعم السماوية ويشعلها بنار محبّته. وليضفِ علينا روحُ السلام بوفرة الرجاءَ والوفاقَ والانسجام.

بهذه المشاعر، وفي هذه المناسبة العزيزة التي أصبحت معروفة، وبحقّ، بيوم الصداقة بين الكنيسة القبطيّة الأرثوذكسيّة والكنيسة الكاثوليكيّة، إنّي أبادلكم عناق سلام أخويّ بالمسيح ربنا.

Caro Fratello,

a seguito della mia visita in Egitto e dell’incontro benedetto con Vostra Santità al Cairo, nella ricorrenza del quarto anniversario del nostro fraterno incontro a Roma il 10 maggio 2013, colgo l’opportunità per esprimerLe i più fervidi auguri di pace e di salute, unitamente alla gioia e alla gratitudine per i legami spirituali che uniscono la Sede di Pietro e la Sede di Marco.

Desidero rinnovare la mia profonda riconoscenza per l’ospitalità che mi ha offerto, così come per il nostro toccante incontro e per la preghiera comune, condivisa come fratelli in Cristo. Sono particolarmente grato per il fatto che abbiamo rafforzato la nostra unità battesimale nel Corpo di Cristo, dichiarando insieme “che con un’anima sola e un cuore solo cercheremo, in tutta sincerità, di non ripetere il Battesimo amministrato in una delle nostre Chiese ad alcuno che desideri ascriversi all’altra”. I vincoli di fraternità tra di noi “ci stimolano a intensificare i nostri sforzi comuni, perseverando nella ricerca di un’unità visibile nella diversità, sotto la guida dello Spirito Santo”.

In questo percorso siamo sostenuti dalla potente intercessione e dall’esempio dei martiri. Continuiamo dunque ad avanzare insieme nel nostro cammino verso la stessa Mensa eucaristica, crescendo nell’amore e nella riconciliazione.

Desidero assicurare la mia continua preghiera per Vostra Santità e per la pace in Egitto e nel Medio Oriente. In questo Tempo pasquale chiedo allo Spirito Santo, forza e tenerezza di Dio, di colmare i nostri cuori di grazia e di accendere in essi il fuoco del suo amore. Possa lo Spirito di pace concederci di crescere nella speranza, nell’amicizia e nella concordia.

Con questi sentimenti, nell’odierna speciale ricorrenza, ormai ben nota come giorno dell’amicizia tra la Chiesa ortodossa copta e la Chiesa cattolica, scambio con Vostra Santità un fraterno abbraccio di pace in Cristo nostro Signore.
