WCC, PEACE ACTION WEEK IN JERUSALEM STARTING TODAY

The “Week of action for peace in the Middle East”, promoted by the World Church Council (Wcc), an ecumenical event with Protestants, Catholics and Orthodox devotees from over 100 countries engaged in prayer and awareness raising campaigns in the areas of peace and justice, will be starting today (until 10th) in Jerusalem. A prayer, composed by the heads of the Churches of Jerusalem, has been handed out for the occasion to be read in the churches and parishes of the countries that will join the Week, to ask the political leaders to “be brave enough as to sign a peace treaty that will end the occupation, that will give freedom to Palestinians and security to Israelis”. Likewise, the Week aims to push the national politicians to “play a more proactive role in the peace process”. Several events will be deployed: intercultural concerts in Holland, in the Philippines the young will meet in a special ‘youth café’ to discuss peace-related problems, while in Australia, Hungary, Scotland, Norway, South-Africa, the Churches will meet politicians and foreign policy experts. Finally, a very symbolic event will be the live clock that will be composed by the young in the Nativity square of Bethlehem to commemorate the occupation Palestinians have been subjected to for 60 years.
