There has been for centuries a tendency of Russian politicians, ideologues, and Church leaders to appropriate foundational aspects of Ukrainian history and identity. One reason why Putin wants control over Ukraine is appropriate the Kyivan legacy. Russian history is much shorter and poorer without the achievements and events that occurred in what today is Ukraine.
