From Saint Petersburg comes the proposal of creating a European Day of Inclusion and Intercultural Tolerance. Lluís Maria de Puig, president of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe, is in the Russian city to attend a conference on the "globalisation of the migratory processes". During her speech to the MPs of the 12 countries of the Community of Independent States (CIS) that came to life after the end of the Soviet Union, de Puig explained that such Day would be "a clear sign of the common commitment to making" intercultural dialogue "one of Europe's political priorities". The idea of a Day as a follow up on 2008 as the Year of Intercultural Dialogue is becoming more and more widely accepted as a common proposal between the EU and the Council of Europe. With today's speech, de Puig intends to make it "become a symbol of the Euro-Asian continent". The president of the Parliamentary Assembly then insisted, during the conference, on the priorities of the CoE on migration: "Strengthening the fundamental rights of migrants, refugees, asylum seekers", "promoting intercultural dialogue, for a real inclusion of migrants", "handling migration respectfully of the different needs of the countries of origin, passage and destination".
