ORTHODOX CHURCH: ROMANIA, RELICS OF SAINT PAUL AS A GIFT FROM A GREEK MONASTERY

The Romanian Orthodox Patriarchate will be presented by the Greek Orthodox monastery of “Panagia Soumela” with fragments of the relic of the Apostle Paul, on the occasion of the Pauline Year. It has been announced by the Patriarch Daniel, in his speech for his birthday. The gift will be given by the metropolitan bishop Pantelimon of Veria of the Greek Orthodox Church on October 27th, the feast of Saint Demetrius the New, the patron saint of the city of Bucharest and of the patriarchal cathedral. The monastery of “Panagia Soumela” is a famous place of pilgrimage in Greece, located at the foot of the Vermio mountains, 90 kilometres west of Salonica. As well as the relics of the Apostle Paul, it is home to an icon of the Virgin which, according to tradition, was made by Luke the Evangelist. In 2005, the relics of the Apostle Paul were taken to Romania for the first time during a pilgrimage in the Orthodox metropolitan bishopric of Iasi.
