“It is more essential than ever now to shed light on what happened. Many theories are heard around that remain mere assumptions when there is no evidence. The day after the funeral of mgr. Luigi Padovese, killed on June 3rd by his driver, the apostolic vicar of Istanbul, mgr. Louis Pelâtre, asks that light be shed on what happened. “Turkish society is varied and very complex – the bishop states to SIR – and we cannot generalise. There are many positions, many ideas and many movements within it. What happened is a problem for Turks as well as they do not know how to respond to such events. It is a problem for us Christians, who are a minority, for the politicians, for society itself. How could that happen? What this young driver did is inexplicable right now, so that’s why we have to look for an explanation”. As to some insinuating remarks spread by the media about the victim’s personality, the vicar of Istanbul calls them “outright lies”. “Mgr. Padovese was not a violent man who imposed his own will. His goodness and moral stature was acknowledged by everyone, Muslims, Jews, the civil authorities, just everyone. We are appalled at such murder – mgr. Pelâtre concludes –. As Catholics, we are called to forgive he who committed it but we must not stop looking for the truth”.

“In questo momento è quanto mai necessario fare chiarezza al più presto. Si sentono dire molte teorie che restano tali in assenza di prove”. Il giorno dopo i funerali di mons. Luigi Padovese, ucciso lo scorso 3 giugno dal suo autista, a chiedere chiarezza sull’accaduto è il vicario apostolico di Istanbul, mons. Louis Pelâtre. “La società turca è variegata e molto complessa – dichiara al SIR il vescovo - e non si può fare di tutta l’erba un fascio. Al suo interno sono rappresentate tante posizioni, tante idee e tanti movimenti. Ciò che è accaduto rappresenta un problema anche per i turchi che non sanno come rispondere a questi avvenimenti. E’ un problema per noi cristiani, che siamo una minoranza, per i politici, per la società stessa. Come è potuto accadere un fatto simile? Quello che ha fatto questo giovane autista è, al momento, inspiegabile per questo vanno cercate delle spiegazioni”. Circa alcune insinuazioni sulla personalità dell’ucciso, riportate dai media, il vicario di Istanbul le definisce “vere e proprie calunnie”. “Mons. Padovese non era un uomo violento che imponeva le sue volontà. La sua bontà e statura morale è stata riconosciuta da tutti, musulmani, ebrei, dalle autorità civili, da tutti. Davanti a questo omicidio siamo sgomenti – conclude mons. Pelâtre - come cattolici siamo chiamati a perdonare chi lo ha compiuto senza rinunciare alla ricerca della verità”.
