ENVIRONMENT: APPEAL OF THE EUROPEAN CHRISTIAN CHURCHES (ECEN), CUT DOWN ON MEAT

An appeal to cut down on meat as a major tool in the fight against climate change. It was made by Ecen, a European Christian network for the promotion of the protection of Creation, the members of which are the Orthodox, Protestant, Anglican and Old Catholic Churches of Kek. The appeal was made at the end of the VIII Assembly, which took place in Prague from 8th to 13th June, which was attended by 80 delegates from 80 countries to discuss “Our daily bread. Living in a time of climate change”. In a release, Ecen explains that during the assembly, “different perspectives were analysed on the connection between daily eating and climate change”. According to Fao, “eating meat largely contributes to global greenhouse gas emissions. Industrial intensive cattle breeding as well as massive deforestation for extensive soy crops as fodder are the main causes”. “Cutting down on meat is therefore a major tool in the fight against climate change”. Then, the Church pointed at the “need to understand that we are the victims of economic drivers that push us to consumerism”. “Only by breaking these psychological mechanisms can we sidestep the problem and become aware that we are part of Creation”.
