(From our correspondents in Assisi) – “Giving to all believers the freedom to truly comprehend one’s fate” and “reducing the misunderstandings of religions that lead to social conflict amongst humanity”. “It’s our duty as religious communities”, said the Secretary General of the International Conference of Islamic Scholars, Kyai Haji Asyim Muzadi, as “evidence of peace” within the inter-religious meeting that is taking place in Assisi. In addition, the Islamic Representative urged to “be wise in differentiating problems that may be categorized as religious and those problems that are abused to be a religious problem”, such as “the interests of the political authorities” that are “labelled as religious issues, while in fact they are far from being such”. “True religions, with their wholesome teachings – Muzadi commented –, may have followers that cannot fully comprehend their healthy character”, hence “there is no doubt that such religious misunderstandings may lead to distort the religion itself”. “Every religion – he added – possesses its own identity”, with “similarities and differences”, where “the shared trait” is “the hope to create human harmony, peace, justice, prosperity and better standards of living”.
