On 13-14 January 2014, His Grace the Archbishop of Canterbury Justin Portal Welby made an official visit to His All-Holiness the Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew. This was the first time that the Archbishop had visited the Phanar. In his speech of welcome the Patriarch emphasized the friendly relations that have existed between the Anglican Communion and the Orthodox Church for many generations, and he expressed his appreciation of the positive progress being made at present by the International Commission for Theological Dialogue between the two Churches. During the course of his time in Istanbul the Archbishop had private discussions with the Patriarch, and he met the members of the Synodal Committee for Inter-Christian Affairs. The Archbishop visited Haghia Sophia and attended a reception at the Consulate General of the UK in Istanbul, and he also visited the Theological School of Halki. A common statement was signed by the Patriarch and the Archbishop, expressing deep concern over the current crisis in the Middle East, and stressing also the importance of the protection of the environment and the hope that the Theological School of Halki will be reopened in the near future.
